The funboard: the most versatile surfboard

The Funboard has a special place in the world of surfing. Accessible enough to support a learning surfer’s progression, it can also deliver great sensations as your level improves. Its balance of volume, stability, and maneuverability makes it one of the most versatile boards on the market.

Sitting between Longboards and Shortboards, the funboard lets you enjoy comfortable paddling while keeping enough responsiveness to start working on your lines and maneuvers. It’s often the board that stays with surfers the longest as they progress.

A board that adapts to many conditions

Funboards and midlengths can combine paddling comfort, glide, and curve work, depending on the model and your surfing style. Discover why choose a funboard or a midlength, the benefits to look for, and the limits to keep in mind before you buy.

This ease of use explains why many surfers keep a funboard in their quiver even after several years in the water. When the waves lack power, it often lets you get more out of the session than an overly radical board.

Surfers looking for even more ease can also check out our selection of Softboards. Conversely, riders who prioritize speed and drive in smaller conditions often appreciate the qualities of Fish Surfboards.

How to choose your funboard?

Choosing a funboard mainly depends on the surfer’s build, experience, and the waves they surf most often. A longer model will provide more stability, paddling comfort, and ease during take-offs. A slightly more compact board will offer more maneuverability and make it easier to commit to turns.

Since 1976, we’ve seen that surfers generally progress faster with a board that has a little more volume rather than the opposite. A board that makes it easier to catch waves lets you rack up more time gliding on the wave, which remains the best way to progress in the long run.

The right gear to get the best out of your funboard

Like any surfboard, a funboard’s behavior changes depending on the accessories you use. Surf Fins directly influence the board’s maneuverability, hold, and speed. Depending on the conditions and the style you’re after, they let you really fine-tune the feeling under your feet.

Good gear also means Surf Leashes suited to the board’s size, a Surf Wax matched to the water temperature, and Surfboard Bags to effectively protect your gear between sessions.

If you’re thinking about replacing your current board, discover which surfboard to choose to progress by first identifying the behavior you want to improve.

FAQ – How to choose your funboard

What is a funboard in surfing?

A funboard is a surfboard that seeks a balance between paddling ease, stability, and maneuverability. This family includes various shapes, ranging from generous boards for beginners to more responsive models for experienced surfers. Their dimensions, volume, and shape determine their performance: two funboards of the same length can provide very different sensations.

What is the difference between a funboard, a mini-malibu, and a mid-length?

These names can overlap. A mini-malibu generally takes on a longboard silhouette in a shorter format, with a rounded nose and an accessible orientation. A mid-length refers to a board of intermediate length, whose shape may favor glide, curves, or more technical surfing. The term funboard mainly emphasizes versatility. Compare the characteristics of the model rather than just its name.

Is a funboard suitable for starting surfing?

Some funboards with enough length, width and volume can work for learning, but not all models are suitable for your first sessions. A compact or performance-oriented funboard requires more skill. To get started with surfing, a foam board designed for beginners, suited to your weight, is generally the most accessible choice. If you’re torn between a foam board and a hard board, check out our guide to choosing a surfboard for your first sessions.

What size and volume of funboard should you choose?

Choose based on your weight, skill level, paddling ability and usual waves. Consider length, width, thickness and volume in litres together. If you’re progressing or surfing occasionally, keep enough buoyancy to catch waves without too much effort. An experienced surfer may prefer a more compact model, as long as it suits their surfing style. If you’re torn between two sizes of the same model, discover how to choose your surfboard size by comparing its length, width and thickness.

Which funboard to choose after a foam board?

Look for a model that maintains good paddling ease and stability suited to your level. A mini-malibu or a generous funboard can accompany the transition to a hardboard when you start catching waves regularly and begin to control your lines. Avoid a significant reduction in volume: a gradual transition helps maintain your wave-catching frequency.

Is a funboard suitable for small waves?

A funboard with a generous shape and good buoyancy can be enjoyable in small, weak waves. It generally makes it easier to catch waves compared to a low-volume performance shortboard. However, not all funboards have the same effectiveness in soft waves: check the recommended conditions for each model. To prioritize early take-offs and glide, also compare the longboards.

Can you surf hollow waves with a funboard?

It depends on the shape and the level of the surfer. The rocker, the rails, the tail, and the dimensions influence the board's ability to handle a steeper slope. A model designed for gliding and soft waves is not automatically suitable for hollow waves. If you are mainly looking for maneuvers in fast waves, also compare the shortboards suited for these conditions.

Funboard or longboard: which one to choose?

A longboard generally prioritizes ease of paddling, early take-offs, and long rides. A funboard offers a more compact shape, often appreciated for working on turns while maintaining buoyancy. Choose based on the sensations you seek and your usual waves: gliding and movement on the board, or a compromise between comfort and maneuverability. Length alone is not enough to distinguish between two models.

Which fins to choose for a funboard?

Check first the boxes and the setup specified on the product sheet. Depending on the model, the board may use three fins, a central fin accompanied by two side fins, or another configuration. Then choose compatible fins that suit your weight. Don't rely solely on the number of boxes: the mounting system and the manufacturer's recommendations also matter.

Are fins included with funboards?

The content varies depending on the board. Check the mention "fins included" and the model description before ordering. A photo showing fins is not enough to confirm that they are provided. If they are sold separately, check their compatibility with the boxes and the setup of your funboard.

What accessories to consider with a funboard?

Plan for a leash suitable for the length of the board and the surf conditions, as well as a cover that fits. For grip, choose a wax appropriate for the water temperature and follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the use of a pad. Also, check the fins provided or needed before your first session.

Can we get a discount on a funboard and fins?

The HawaiiSurf surf pack offer allows you to benefit from a 5% immediate discount on the purchase of a board and a set of fins, excluding already discounted products. Choose a set compatible with your funboard and check the discount displayed in your cart before finalizing your order.
