Surf & Bodyboard Repair: Extend the Life of Your Gear

A well-maintained board can accompany a rider for many years. However, even the most robust gear is never completely safe from impacts, cracks, or shocks during transport. Acting quickly not only helps preserve the board's performance but also prevents water from seeping in and causing lasting damage to its structure.

Whether it's a Surfboard, a bodyboard, or a fin, timely repairs often prevent costly replacements and allow you to fully enjoy your sessions.

Repair Quickly to Avoid Further Damage

A small impact may seem harmless after a session, but it quickly becomes problematic if water starts to penetrate the board. The sooner the intervention, the simpler and more effective the repair.

Since 1976, we have observed that a significant portion of major repairs could have been avoided with early intervention. Having the right kit often allows for immediate treatment of minor damages before they become more serious.

Epoxy or Polyester: Choosing the Right Product

Not all boards are repaired in the same way. The choice of resin directly depends on the construction of the gear. An epoxy board requires products compatible with this technology, while a polyester construction demands a specific resin.

Using the right product is essential to ensure a durable repair and maintain the flex, strength, and buoyancy qualities of the board after intervention.

The Most Impact-Prone Areas

Over the years, certain areas prove to be particularly sensitive. The rails, nose, and tail regularly suffer shocks during handling, transport, or collisions in the waves. These parts deserve special attention as they are often the first to show signs of wear.

Regular inspections allow for quick identification of minor damages and intervention before the situation worsens.

Surf, Bodyboard, and Accessories: Everything Can Be Maintained

Repairs are not only for surfboards. Bodyboard enthusiasts can also extend the life of their gear with suitable solutions. Some repairs on fins or accessories can also prevent premature replacements.

With regular maintenance and a few simple actions, it is often possible to keep your equipment in excellent condition for many seasons.

Prevention is the Best Repair

The best repair is often the one you avoid. A suitable Surf Cover effectively protects the gear during transport, while storage away from heat and UV light limits premature aging of materials.

Quality accessories like Surf Leashes, Surf Fins, and Surf Wax also help preserve the performance of the gear over time.

FAQ – Repair of surfboards and bodyboards

Which product to choose to repair a surfboard?

Choose based on the board construction, the exposed material, and the extent of the damage. A small crack in the laminate, a lack of foam, and a damaged fin box require different interventions. Check the product compatibility with the core and the coating before purchasing. If in doubt, have the construction identified rather than randomly choosing a resin.

What is the difference between an epoxy and polyester repair?

These products use different formulations, and compatibility must be checked with the board. A polyester resin should not be applied to an exposed EPS core, as it can cause damage. For an epoxy/EPS construction, choose a product that is explicitly compatible. The name of the original resin is not always enough: the materials accessible in the damaged area also matter.

How to tell if my board is epoxy or polyester?

Check the product page, the markings on the board or the manufacturer's information. If possible, identify the laminating resin and core type, particularly EPS or polyurethane. Appearance, colour and weight alone cannot give you a definitive answer. If the construction is still unknown, ask for advice before applying a repair product. To distinguish between the laminating resin and the core material, check out our guide to the differences between epoxy and polyester surfboards before choosing your repair product.

What is Solarez Microlite Polyester used for?

Microlite Polyester is a lightweight filling product, specifically designed for certain repairs of polyurethane foam. It meets a different need than just sealing a crack and does not systematically replace a lamination reinforcement. This polyester version is not suitable for EPS or polystyrene cores. Check the material and product instructions before use.

Can you repair a small ding on a surfboard yourself?

Yes, some small localized damages can be treated with a compatible product, on a properly prepared and dry area. The repair must restore the seal without hiding a deeper damage. A broken board, significant delamination, or a torn binding require professional assessment, even if a kit can visually fill the area.

Can you continue surfing with a crack?

If the crack goes through the layers or exposes the core, take the board out of the water and get it repaired before resuming. A small open damage can allow for water infiltration, even if it seems minor. A simple superficial mark doesn't necessarily have the same consequences: when in doubt, have the area checked rather than testing its waterproofness during a session.

Should you let the board dry before repairing it?

Yes. The surface and materials to be repaired must be sufficiently dry to allow for good adhesion and to avoid trapping moisture. The time frame depends on the amount of water that has infiltrated and the construction: there is no universal duration. Avoid high temperatures to speed up drying. If the board has absorbed a lot of water, consult a repair professional.

How to prepare a crack before applying a product?

Remove the wax, sand, and dirt around the area, then follow the preparation prescribed by the manufacturer: cleaning, possible sanding, and removal of non-adhering parts. Do not use a solvent without checking its compatibility, especially if the foam is exposed. A clean surface is not enough if the substrate is still damp or weakened.

How does UV repair resin work?

A UV resin hardens when it receives appropriate exposure to ultraviolet light. The necessary conditions vary depending on the formula, the thickness applied, and the light source. Follow the product instructions rather than a generic time frame of a few minutes. Prepare and apply the resin away from exposure that could cause it to harden before positioning.

What is a UV lamp used for in surfboard repair?

A compatible UV lamp allows for the polymerization of certain products without solely relying on sunlight. It does not cure all resins: check the required wavelength, exposure conditions, and compatibility with the product. A standard two-component resin does not become a UV resin just because it is placed under a lamp.

What is the difference between Board Bog Cool and Warm?

The Cool and Warm versions are offered for different temperature conditions. Choose according to the reference guidelines and the intended usage conditions, then check compatibility with the board. A quick fix may cover a small damage, but it does not necessarily restore the strength of a laminate or structural element.

Does a travel kit fit all boards?

No. The term "travel kit" describes its format and use, not universal compatibility. Check the included products and their compatibility with epoxy, polyester, or foam, as well as the necessary accessories for preparation and finishing. A compact kit can help with minor damage but won't cover a significant structural repair.

Can you use surf resin to repair a bodyboard?

Not automatically. A bodyboard combines materials whose properties and grip differ from those of a rigid surfboard. A resin compatible with an EPS core is not necessarily suitable for all bodyboards. Identify the core, the covering, and the damaged area, then request a compatibility confirmation before purchasing.

How to repair a softboard or a peeling coating?

The method depends on the soft covering, the core, and the internal structure. A delamination may require a different solution than a rigid lamination repair. Do not apply a generic resin or glue without the manufacturer's validation. For a large delaminated area or damage near a binding, have the board assessed before any intervention.

When can we return to the water after a repair?

Wait for the complete polymerization and any finishing steps indicated in the instructions. A hard surface to the touch does not always confirm that the repair is ready. Check for sealing, the absence of sharp edges, and the durability of the product. The required time varies depending on the formula, thickness, and application conditions.

When should you take your board to a repair shop?

Call on a professional for a break, a significant crack, major delamination, substantial infiltration, or damage affecting a fin box, leash plug, or internal reinforcement. A repair should restore the function of the area, not just its appearance. Also, seek advice when you cannot identify the construction.

How to limit damage to a surfboard?

Use a suitable surf bag, protect the ends during transport, and avoid over-tightening the straps. Store the board away from high temperatures and regularly inspect the nose, tail, rails, and bindings. Identifying damage before the next session helps prevent it from worsening.
