Bodyboard Leashes: Safety, Comfort, and Freedom in the Waves

(10 products)

The bodyboard leash: a simple yet essential accessory

Many practitioners quickly discover that a good bodyboard leash is an integral part of their gear. Its role is simple: to keep the board close after a wipeout to avoid losing it in the waves and to limit risks for other surfers in the water.

Since 1976, we have consistently recommended using a suitable leash. It is one of the least expensive accessories for bodyboarding, but also one of the most important for practicing under good conditions.

Why use a leash in bodyboarding?

A bodyboard can be quickly swept away by a wave after a wipeout. Without a leash, it becomes difficult to retrieve your gear, and some situations can become dangerous when other surfers are nearby.

The leash not only secures the board but also saves energy by avoiding long recoveries after each wipeout. This extra safety significantly improves comfort during sessions.

Wrist leash or bicep leash?

Both systems exist and cater to different preferences. Some riders appreciate the simplicity of the wrist leash, while others prefer the bicep leash for greater freedom of movement during paddling and maneuvers.

The choice mainly depends on the rider's habits, level, and personal preferences. In both cases, the goal remains the same: to maintain a reliable connection with the board without hindering practice.

An essential element of cohesive gear

The leash fits into a larger set. A Bodyboard suitable for the rider's level forms the base of the gear, while Bodyboard Fins enhance propulsion and positioning in the waves.

Maintaining your leash through the seasons

Like any accessory exposed to saltwater, sand, and UV rays, a leash deserves a minimum of maintenance. Rinsing it with fresh water after each session helps preserve the materials and extend its lifespan.

Regularly checking the cord, attachments, and Velcro also helps avoid unpleasant surprises during the most intense sessions.

FAQ — How to Choose Your Bodyboard Leash

What is a bodyboard leash used for?

The bodyboard leash connects your board to your wrist or arm to limit its loss after a fall. It prevents you from having to retrieve a board carried away by the waves after every imbalance. Its effectiveness depends on the condition of the cord, the strap, and the attachment to the board. It remains a connecting accessory, not a rescue equipment.

Bodyboard leash for wrist or bicep: which one to choose?

The wrist leash attaches around the wrist, while the bicep leash is worn on the upper arm. The latter keeps the strap away from the hands, which some riders appreciate for paddling and maneuvers. Choose according to your comfort and habits: the strap should stay in place without hindering your movements or compressing the arm.

Which bodyboard leash to choose for beginners?

Choose a model that is easy to adjust, comfortable, and suitable for the conditions in which you practice. The Sniper Regular Coiled and Deluxe Coiled are among the wrist options offered in our selection. You can also choose a bicep model if that position suits you better. Be sure to check the size of the strap and the compatibility of the attachment with your board.

Why are bodyboard leashes often coiled?

A spiral cord, also known as coiled, remains more compact at rest and unfolds when needed. This shape limits the length of free cord around the rider during use. However, it does not eliminate all risks of tangling. Make sure the leash allows you enough freedom to paddle and change position.

How to choose the size of the leash bracelet?

Check the sizes and model-specific indications: the correspondences S-M, L-XL or other sizes are not universal. Consider your wrist or arm circumference, as well as the thickness of your wetsuit. Once closed, the strap should remain stable without excessive tightness, with enough closure surface to ensure its hold.

What is the difference between a 7 mm bodyboard leash and a 9 mm leash?

These values correspond to the cord diameter, not its length or the size of the bracelet. The collection includes Roam bicep leashes of 7 mm and the Sniper Charger Pro Amaury Lavernhe of 9 mm. Also compare the material, tips, pivots, and the advertised program: the diameter alone does not guarantee the strength of the whole.

Which leash to choose for a more committed practice?

Look for a model that the manufacturer designs for the desired conditions. The Sniper Charger Pro 9 mm Amaury Lavernhe features a 9 mm spiral cord made of polyurethane, a neoprene bicep strap, and two stainless steel pivots. Also, check the attachment of your board: a reinforced leash does not compensate for a damaged or poorly installed plug.

What are the pivots on a bodyboard leash for?

The pivots, or swivels, allow the cord to rotate at its connections to limit twisting during movements. Their presence and arrangement vary depending on the models. After each session, rinse these elements and check that they move freely. A stuck, deformed, or loose swivel deserves special attention before going back in the water.

How to attach a leash to a bodyboard?

Check first the presence and condition of the leash plug, then follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. If the board requires the installation of a plug, its location must take into account the internal reinforcements, particularly the stringers. Do not drill your bodyboard randomly. Also, check if the plug and the attachment cord are included with the chosen model.

Can you use a leash on an inflatable bodyboard?

Yes, if the board has a designated attachment point for this purpose. The Sniper Puffer Fish has an integrated attachment: use it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Never pierce the inflatable structure to install a standard bodyboard plug. Find the relevant models in our collection of inflatable bodyboards.

What is the difference between a bodyboard leash and a fin leash?

The bodyboard leash connects the rider to their board. A fin leash or fin retention system helps prevent the loss of a fin when it comes off. The DaFiN Fin Savers offered in this collection fit around the heel strap and fasten over the instep. These two accessories serve complementary functions.

When should you replace your bodyboard leash?

Replace it when you notice a frayed cord, damaged connections, worn seams, or a closure that no longer holds properly. Also check the pivots and the attachment on the board. There is no identical lifespan for all leashes: usage, pulls, and sun exposure affect their wear.

How to maintain your leash after a session?

Rinse the cord, the strap, and the pivots with fresh water, then remove any sand from the Velcro closure. Let it dry in the shade and store the leash without prolonged tension or forced bends at the joints. Avoid leaving your gear in a hot car and take the opportunity to check its condition while storing it.

Can we get a discount when buying a leash with a bodyboard?

Yes. With our bodyboard pack offer, add a bodyboard and a bodyboard leash to your cart to enjoy a 10% discount on the board. Check the application of the discount before ordering. Then complete your gear with bodyboard fins suitable for your size.
