The bodyboard: the foundation of all sessions

Choosing a bodyboard that fits is one of the most important decisions to fully enjoy the discipline. A well-chosen board makes wave catching easier, improves control, and allows for faster progression regardless of the conditions encountered.

Since 1976, we have been supporting practitioners of all levels and have found that a bodyboard suited to the rider's size and practice immediately transforms the sensations in the water. It is often the factor that most influences enjoyment and progression.

How to choose your bodyboard?

The choice of a bodyboard primarily depends on the level, weight, height of the practitioner, and the type of waves surfed. A beginner will generally look for a forgiving board that is easy to handle, while an experienced rider will prioritize speed, responsiveness, and precision.

Practitioners discovering the discipline can also turn to our Bodyboard Packs, an ideal solution to start with a coherent and suitable setup.

Understanding the different constructions

Not all boards react the same way in the waves. Leisure-oriented models generally prioritize ease and comfort, while more technical constructions offer greater performance in powerful conditions.

Riders who practice regularly often appreciate models that provide better performance, more rebound, and better hold in hollow waves. The choice of construction directly influences the sensations felt in the water.

Accessories that support your progression

A good board deserves suitable equipment. The Bodyboard Fins help gain propulsion and position more effectively in the waves. They are an essential element of the practice and accompany the rider's progression at all levels.

The Bodyboard Leashes ensure safety by keeping the board close after a fall. A Bodyboard Bag also effectively protects the gear during transport and storage.

A board that evolves with your level

Needs naturally evolve with experience. Many practitioners start with an accessible bodyboard before gradually refining their gear over the years. This progression allows for a better understanding of the differences between constructions, shapes, and behaviors in the water.

Riders who travel regularly can also discover the Inflatable Bodyboards, particularly appreciated for their ease of transport and compactness.

Preserving your gear longer

A well-maintained board retains its performance season after season. Rinsing after each session, storing out of the sun, and using suitable accessories can significantly extend the lifespan of the gear.

In case of impact or damage, Bodyboard Repair products often allow for quick intervention to prevent further degradation.

FAQ — How to Choose Your Bodyboard

How to choose your bodyboard?

Choose your bodyboard based on your weight, your height, your level, and your practice. Then compare the construction and flex considering the water temperature and the waves surfed. A board for discovering the discipline, a model for progressing in a lying position, and a bodyboard dedicated to drop knee cater to different needs.

What bodyboard size should you choose based on your build?

The length of a bodyboard is generally expressed in inches: a size 42 corresponds to about 106.7 cm. Rely on the recommended weight and the manufacturer's size guide, then consider your height and practice. The width and thickness also influence buoyancy: two boards of the same length may not necessarily be suitable for the same build.

Which bodyboard to choose for beginners?

Choose a board that suits your size, is easy to handle, and designed for learning. In the Sniper range, the Shenron PE Flex and Cortex PE Flex are options to discover the discipline and progress. The right choice then depends on the available dimensions, your budget, and your practice conditions. The most expensive model is not necessarily the most suitable.

What is the difference between an EPS, PE, and PP bodyboard?

These names refer to the material of the core, also called core. EPS is used in accessible models designed for beginners. PE is generally sought after for its flex and comfort, especially in cold water. PP combines lightness and responsiveness, with constructions often focused on performance. Also compare the reinforcements and the stated flex: the core alone does not describe the entire behavior of the board.

Which bodyboard to choose for cold water or warm water?

The water temperature influences the flexibility of the board. PE Flex constructions are interesting for maintaining flex in cold to temperate water. PP models are often preferred in temperate to warm water, depending on their construction. For year-round use, cross-reference the manufacturer's recommendations with your size: there is no ideal core for all riders and all seasons.

What do Flex, Mid, and Stiff mean on a bodyboard?

These terms indicate the desired flex behavior: Flex refers to a soft construction, Mid is an intermediate compromise, and Stiff is a stiffer construction within the relevant range. These are not universal measurements between brands. Choose based on your weight, water temperature, and preferences; a stiffer board will not automatically be easier to control.

What are the stringers and reinforcements of a bodyboard for?

The stringers are internal reinforcements that contribute to the rigidity and performance of the board. Some constructions also add a mesh, a reinforcement framework. Their number and arrangement modify the overall flex. To compare two bodyboards, look at the combination of the core, stringers, and other reinforcements rather than an isolated characteristic.

Which bodyboard to choose for prone or drop knee?

The prone involves surfing lying down, while the drop knee is practiced with one knee and one foot on the board. For regular drop knee practice, opt for a shape designed for this position, like the Sniper Prayer PP Drop Knee offered in our selection. For prone, choose the dimensions and construction based on your build and the sensations you seek.

How to choose a bodyboard for a child or a large adult?

In both cases, start with the recommended weight for the model. For a child, avoid a board that is too large chosen solely to anticipate their growth. For a large adult, also check the width, thickness, and reinforcements. Increasing the length without comparing buoyancy and construction can lead to a poorly suited board.

Are the leash and fins included with the board?

Check the content indicated on each product sheet: accessories are not always included. To complete your gear, choose a bodyboard leash and suitable bodyboard fins. Also, check for the presence of the leash plug and the mounting instructions before any installation.

Can we get a discount when buying a board with a leash?

Yes. With our bodyboard pack offer, add a bodyboard and a bodyboard leash to your cart to enjoy a 10% discount on the board. Check the application of the discount before confirming your order. Fins and other accessories should be selected separately.

How to maintain and protect your bodyboard?

Rinse your bodyboard with fresh water after each session and let it dry in the shade. Avoid high heat, storing it in a car exposed to the sun, and loads that can warp the board. A suitable bodyboard bag protects the gear during transport. In case of damage, check the compatibility of the repair product with your board's materials before any intervention.
